Helms Hope is a non-profit organization advancing skin cancer prevention, awareness, and early detection. Inspired by the life and lasting legacy of 21-year-old Shawn Helms Jr, Helms Hope encourages everyone to:
- Wear sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and reapply
every 2 hours or after going in the water.
- Wear a hat to shield your face, neck, and ears.
- Avoid peak exposure. The sun’s rays are strongest
from 10 AM–4 PM.
- Wear sunglasses! They block harmful UVA and UVB rays.
“One in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime,” Shawn Helms, the father of Shawn Helms, Jr. and co-founder of Helms Hope, said. “Melanoma is one the deadliest cancers in the world. Seeing a dermatologist annually and checking your skin could absolutely save your life or the life of a loved one.”
Because Shawn Jr.’s melanoma began on his scalp and was hidden by his thick hair, Helms Hope has created a skin cancer awareness program that involves hair stylists and barbers—the people who routinely view your scalp!
